What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which your breathing repeatedly stops and starts throughout the night. When your breathing stops, your brain sends signals to your body to wake you up. You may experience snorting, gasping or choking. This can happen dozens of times each hour, preventing oxygen from reaching your brain and other organs. The constant disruptions also keep you from reaching the deep, restful sleep necessary to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Do you suffer from sleep apnea? Many symptoms of sleep apnea, such as loud snoring or halted breathing during sleep, may be reported by your spouse or other family members. However, other common symptoms include:

  • Waking up with a dry or sore throat
  • Waking up with a dry mouth
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty staying asleep
  • Irritability
  • Morning headaches

If you suffer from one or more of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with our orthodontist to discuss your sleep apnea treatment options.

What Causes Sleep Apnea?

The most common form of sleep apnea that we diagnose and treat is obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the muscles in the back of your throat relax during sleep. When these muscles relax, your airway closes or narrows as you breathe. Your brain senses that you have stopped breathing and wakes you so that you can reopen your airway.

While sleep apnea is a common condition that affects many people, there are certain lifestyle and health factors that may increase your risk. Weight, family history, smoking and age can factor into your chances of developing sleep apnea. Men are also two to three times more likely to develop sleep apnea than women.

How is Sleep Apnea Treated?

Our practice offers specially designed oral appliances to open your airways and alleviate your sleep apnea symptoms. Be sure to schedule an appointment to discuss find out which sleep apnea treatment is right for you.
